Afellay won't bring much to the squad

Today's press were all going on about how we were going to sign Dutch star Ibrahim Afellay for free when he is eligible to sign a pre-contract in January. Personally, I don't rate this guy very much and am not sure why we are interested in him anyway. He certainly did not spark the World Cup alight with his substitute appearances.

Afellay can play as a playmaker or in the wide areas, both positions which we have plenty of resources. So does the imminent signing of Afellay mean that one of the existing players is on the way out. I think so and my best guess is either Rosicky or Arshavin to be the ones moving on in the summer.

No doubt Afellay is a good player but is he better than Arshavin or Rosicky? I don't think so. Although the Russian isn't in the best form of his life currently, he still provides the assist and get the goals when it is needed. Rosicky is also coming back from his many injury problems and starting to return to his form when we signed him from Borussia Dortmund.

My guesses may be wrong, and Arsene might get rid of Carlos Vela. The mexican is struggling to get into the side and could definitely leave in the summer but where young ones are considered, we have another two new signings coming in, Wellington Silva and Samuel Galindo. These are done and dusted deals. By the looks of both, they are pretty decent players at their age and would give Afellay a run for his money.

Therefore, I am not excited about this development and don't think Afellay can contribute anything that is not already present in the squad. I would rather Arsene spend the money on the Dutchman's wages to bolster the squad in defense where we are still short of experience back-ups.
